Creating a Response in a Discussion Forum

Monique Staats Updated by Monique Staats

To create a response to the "Student Lounge", or any other discussion forum, click Reply, directly beneath the prompt:

A text box will appear below, and now you can enter your content! Note that the discussion board allows customization of your text, and also allows you to include items like links, pictures, files, and more.

Canvas will not auto-save your content. If you are drafting a lengthy response, we recommend typing and saving your response in a different location (like Word or a Google Doc) so that you don't lose your progress. Then, you can copy/paste your work into the discussion.

Once you are satisfied with your post, click the Reply button to post your response.

After you post, you will see your response at the top of the thread. Newest responses will show up at the top, so make sure to scroll down to read your classmate's responses and interact with their posts.

Replies to discussion posts will be nested. To view replies, click on the carrot just below the post. You will notice that Canvas indicates posts you have not yet read with a dot next to the user's profile image/initial, to ensure you do not miss any content. You can also show your support by Liking a classmate's post!

I need help uploading a video to my discussion. How do I do that?
Check out this article for steps to help you upload your video to share with your class.
How do I update or edit my discussion board post?
Scroll through the discussion board to find your post (it will not work if you use the search bar). Click the three vertical dots on the right side of your response text box, then select Edit.

Once you have made your edits, click the Save button in the lower right corner.

Note: Please send your facilitator a message to let them know that you have updated your discussion board post. This will help ensure the update is seen in a timely manner.
