Converting a Google Docs File to Another Format for Submission

Monique Staats Updated by Monique Staats

I don't have Microsoft Office and plan to use Google Docs instead of Word. How can I save my assignment as a Word file to submit?

Many students who do not have a Microsoft Office license, and can not edit course project documents or other course files in Word, choose to use Google Docs.

After editing your assignment, you will need to export your file to an accepted format, as listed on your assignment submission page (typically Word or PDF).

Note: in order to use Google Docs, you will need to either have a Gmail account or open a Google account with your non-Gmail email.

In this example, we will show how to access and edit your file via Google Drive.

  1. First, download your assignment file from within your course. In this example, we will use the Course Project.

Pay special attention to where this document saves on your local device. Most of the time, files are saved automatically to your Downloads folder, but they may also save to your Desktop, Documents, or a different location.
  2. Click and drag your file into your Google Drive, or use the +NEW button to upload your file.

Click and drag

+NEW button

  1. Once your file is loaded to your Drive folder, double-click to open it. The file should automatically open in the Google-equivalent program. In this case, the Course Project Word document will open in Docs:
  2. Edit and complete your assignment as needed within Docs. The top menu bar will show editing tools similar to Word if you need to make any customizations to your text.
  3. Once you have finished working on your assignment, click on File in the top-left corner of the page. Then, hover over the Download option, which will expand to a second list. Here, you can choose the file type you need (again, most courses will accept Word or PDF, be sure to check the assignment instructions).
  4. Similar to Step 1, pay special attention to where this document saves on your local device. Then, you can upload your file into your course!
