What is a Symposium?

Brittany Iafrate Updated by Brittany Iafrate

Symposium sessions feature live, highly interactive virtual events on Zoom that explore today’s most pressing topics. Each Symposium offers a unique opportunity to engage in real-time conversations with peers and experts from the Cornell community and beyond. You’ll participate in reflections and small-group discussions, using your own experiences as context, to build on the skills and knowledge you’ve gained from your courses.

By participating in relevant and engaging discussions, you will discover a variety of perspectives and build connections with your fellow participants from various industries.

All sessions are held on Zoom.

You may participate in as many Symposium sessions as you wish while you are enrolled in an applicable eCornell program. Attending Symposium is entirely optional, and attendance is not required to successfully complete your certificate program. Once enrolled in your courses, you will receive information about upcoming Symposium events for two years following your initial enrollment date.

Symposia are not recorded. This is an opportunity to engage in a live format with your peers and subject-matter experts. If you are not able to attend, there will be another session at a later date.

We currently offer symposia in the following topics for students enrolled in related certificate programs:

  • AI Symposium
  • Hospitality Symposium
  • Human Resources Symposium
  • Leadership Symposium
  • Marketing Symposium
  • Project Management Symposium
  • Workplace Belonging Symposium
Students are automatically added to the respective symposia if they are enrolled in a qualifying program. Students are eligible to attend the relevant symposium for up to two years after their initial enrollment date.
How do I access the Symposium?
You will receive email invitations with details about upcoming Symposium events. You will see a tile on your Canvas dashboard with the Symposium Title. Click on that tile to access the Symposium sessions.
Can I audit a symposium even if I'm not part of the program?
Unfortunately, no. These events are provided as an additional resource to students in specific programs.
Can I transfer the symposium to a future date?
Since these are live, recurring events, there are no 'start' and 'end' dates and the 'course' cannot be transferred. If you are unable to attend during a posted cycle, there will be no repercussion and you can attend a future cycle instead!
Do I get credits for attending?
As Symposia are offered as a resource and opportunity to connect with others in your field, attendance is not mandatory. Therefore, attendees do not receive a grade, credit, or record of attendance.
