Best Practices for eCornell Students

Brittany Iafrate Updated by Brittany Iafrate

Consistency is key. The most successful eCornell students set a regular schedule. Try to dedicate 3-5 hours each week (about 30-60 minutes a day) to your coursework. Start early and work steadily rather than leaving everything to the last minute. This routine makes your workload feel manageable and keeps stress low.

Stay organized. Review your syllabus as soon as your course opens so you know the grading scheme, due dates, and passing requirements (remember, you typically need an 85% or higher to pass and your syllabus will note if your course has a different requirement ). Use your course calendar and the Grades page to track your assignments and deadlines.

Communicate early and often. If you have a question or feel stuck, don’t wait- send your facilitator a message through Canvas. If you are encountering a technical issue- reach out to the HelpDesk. Engaging with classmates in discussions and the Student Lounge can also help reinforce your learning and offer new perspectives.

Be actively engaged. Make time for optional live sessions if you can- they’re a great chance to connect, ask questions, and hear from others. Check your Canvas email regularly for important course updates and feedback from your facilitator.

Take advantage of resources. Start with the Knowledge Base for quick, searchable answers to common questions- it's your first stop for troubleshooting and general information. Be sure to complete the New Student Orientation course, as it’s designed to walk you through everything you need to know before your first class. If you can’t find what you need, you can always email the helpdesk for personal support.

Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Whether you’re facing a technical challenge or need an extension due to unexpected circumstances, reaching out early can make all the difference. If you have submitted at least half of your assignments and need more time, contact your facilitator before the course ends to request a 48-hour extension.

A few final tips:Take no more than two courses at a time for the best learning experience. Download your important materials and course transcript for your records. The students who participate, ask questions early, and engage with the eCornell community are the ones who thrive.

Remember: you’re not alone on this journey. If you need support, we’re here to help.

Expand Your Learning: Extra Features & Benefits eCornell offers more than just coursework! Students are invited to participate in Keynotes- live or recorded events featuring Cornell experts on trending topics- and Symposia, which are interactive sessions that help you connect, collaborate, and apply your knowledge in real-world contexts. These are excellent opportunities to broaden your perspective, build your network, and enrich your overall learning experience.
